Simon Casson’s newest body of work will be showcased in an exhibition at Scott Richards Contemporary Art from April 4 – 30, 2007. The exhibition opens on Thursday, April 5, from 5:30-7:30 PM.

Casson creates works in the Western tradition of figure painting, reinterpreted within a contemporary context. Combining elements from the entire history of visual art, his works are a discovery of the history painting for the 21st Century. His works make reference to many of the Old Masters, such as Titian, Caravaggio, and Fragonard, while also infusing an abstracted, gestural energy that reminds the viewer of DeKooning and Richter.

Entitled Catalogue of the Iliad, Casson’s new series of paintings on canvas pays homage to the Homer’s Iliad, a 15,000 line poem written in ancient Greece, circa 700 BC. The theme of this recent body of work is classical, yet timeless, referencing the list of ships that transported the Greek soldiers to faraway lands and the regions they came upon in their travels.

Simon Casson was born in 1965 in York, England. He graduated from the Exeter College of Art and attended The London Institute, where he received a postgraduate diploma in printmaking, and a postgraduate diploma in painting from the Royal Academy of the Arts. A highly decorated artist, he was a recipient of the Royal Academy Medal for Painting.
